Home to the state's flagship university, the Athens MSA has enjoyed significant population growth since 1980 and forecasters expect that to continue for more than the next two decades. According to the 2010 Census, this metropolitan statistical area has reached 192,541 residents. State budget planners expect the area to add more than 20,000 new residents by 2015. Over the next decade, the population is expected to approach nearly 260,000.
